What is multiplication?
Multiplication counts equal groups. For example, 4 × 3 means four groups of three, or 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. The numbers being multiplied are factors, and their result is the product.
How do you multiply a two-digit number by one digit?
Multiply the ones
Start with the rightmost digit. Carry any tens to the next place.
Multiply the tens
Multiply the tens digit and add the tens you carried.
Check the size of the answer
Estimate first or divide your result by the one-digit factor to check it.
Worked example: 23 × 4
Multiply the ones: 3 × 4 = 12. Write 2 ones and carry 1 ten. Multiply the tens: 2 × 4 + 1 = 9 tens. So 23 × 4 = 92. A check is 92 ÷ 4 = 23.
