What is a fraction?
A fraction names part of a whole. In 3/4, the numerator 3 counts the parts and the denominator 4 tells how many equal parts make the whole. These worksheets include adding fractions with matching or different denominators and multiplying fractions.
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator
Choose a multiple shared by both denominators.
Rewrite each fraction
Multiply its numerator and denominator by the same number so both denominators match.
Add and simplify
Add the numerators, keep the denominator, and reduce the result if possible.
Worked example: 1/4 + 1/6
The smallest common denominator is 12. Rewrite 1/4 as 3/12 and 1/6 as 2/12. Add: 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12. The result is already in lowest terms.
