What is addition?
Addition puts two or more amounts together to find a total. The numbers being added are called addends, and the result is their sum. For example, in 8 + 7 = 15, 8 and 7 are addends and 15 is the sum.
How do you add two-digit numbers?
Line up the digits
Write the numbers so the ones are under the ones and the tens are under the tens.
Add the ones first
If the ones total 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry one ten to the next column.
Add the tens
Include any ten you carried, then read the complete sum from left to right.
Worked example: 27 + 15
Add the ones: 7 + 5 = 12. Write 2 in the ones place and carry 1 ten. Add the tens: 2 + 1 + 1 carried = 4. So 27 + 15 = 42. Check by subtracting: 42 − 15 = 27.
Choose an addition level
Adding within 20
Addition combines two amounts to find a total. For example, 8 + 7 = 15. The first level keeps every total at or below 20 for early practice.
Two-digit and three-digit addition
Choose 2-digit + 2-digit or 3-digit + 3-digit for place-value practice. Some generated problems require regrouping; compare each place from right to left.
