What is a linear equation?
A linear equation describes points on a straight line. In y = mx + b, m is the slope, or change in y for each step in x, and b is the point where the line crosses the y-axis. The printable grids show values from −5 to 5 on each axis.
How do you graph a line from y = mx + b?
Plot the y-intercept
Start at (0, b), where the line meets the vertical axis.
Use the slope
A slope of 2 means go one unit right and two units up to find a second point.
Draw and check
Draw a straight line through both points. Substitute a plotted x-value into the equation to check its y-value.
Worked example: graph y = 2x + 1
The y-intercept is 1, so plot (0, 1). The slope is 2, so move one step right and two up to plot (1, 3). Connect the points. Check: when x = 1, y = 2(1) + 1 = 3.
