What is division?
Division splits an amount into equal groups. In 42 ÷ 7 = 6, 42 is the dividend, 7 is the divisor, and 6 is the quotient. Multiplication reverses division: 7 × 6 = 42.
How do you divide when there is a remainder?
Find the largest multiple that fits
Multiply the divisor by a whole number without going past the dividend.
Subtract to find what remains
The leftover amount is the remainder. It must be smaller than the divisor.
Verify the result
Multiply the divisor by the quotient and add the remainder. You should get the dividend.
Worked example: 74 ÷ 6
The largest multiple of 6 not greater than 74 is 6 × 12 = 72. Subtract: 74 − 72 = 2. The answer is 12 R2. Check: 6 × 12 + 2 = 74, and 2 is smaller than 6.
